Swastik Showpiece in Natural Gemstones

Pink Tourmaline, Blue Topaz, Peridot, Amethyst, Citrine · Walnut

Available, individually presented

The swastik, with each arm in a different gemstone. Peridot green, pink tourmaline, blue topaz and amethyst take one arm each, with four small citrine rounds marking the quadrants between them. Giving each arm its own colour is unusual, and it is the reason this piece reads as four directions rather than as a single figure. Twenty seven stones, fewer than any other piece we make, each one larger and doing more work. Placed by hand onto cream suede, framed in solid wood, set on an engraved stand. The swastik is drawn at thresholds, on ledgers at Diwali, and above doorways at a griha pravesh. It is the most domestic of the sacred symbols, which is why it makes such a natural housewarming gift. In the tradition, peridot is associated with Budh, pink tourmaline with Shukra, blue topaz with Guru, amethyst with Shani, and citrine with Brihaspati. Five stones for five grahas, one to each arm and the centre. These are traditional associations rather than claims about what a stone will do.

The symbol

The swastik marks the four directions and, by extension, the idea that good fortune should arrive from all of them. It is drawn at the threshold of a new house, on the first page of a ledger at Diwali, and beside the door at a wedding. Giving each arm its own stone makes the four directions literal rather than implied.

How it is made

Twenty seven stones, the fewest of any piece we make, which means each is larger and every placement is more exposed. Four arms of six matched ovals, five light amethysts at the centre, and four citrine rounds at 2.5 mm marking the quadrants. Symmetry is unforgiving here; the eye finds any arm sitting a degree out of true. Placed by hand onto suede, framed in solid wood, engraved base.

Questions about this piece

It is an object for a home or a desk. The stones are laid on cream suede inside a solid wood frame with its own stand, not mounted in jewellery. It is not a ratna prescribed for astrological remedy, and nothing about it needs to be worn, energised or activated.
