ੴ, the opening of the Mool Mantar, drawn in thirty four natural citrines. Citrine gives a warm amber gold that reads like light through honey. Against cream suede it glows rather than contrasts, which makes this the softer of our two Ek Onkar pieces and the one most often chosen as a gift. Ek Onkar is the first character of the Guru Granth Sahib and the beginning of the Mool Mantar. It means one, and it is written as a single continuous stroke, which is why the numeral and the character are inseparable. Laying it in stone means holding that unbroken line across thirty four separate gems. Every stone is placed by hand onto suede, framed in solid wood, and set on its own engraved stand. Suited to a home, a gurdwara room, an office, or as a gift for a new house, a wedding, or Gurpurab. In the tradition, citrine is associated with Brihaspati, the teacher, and linked to expansion, learning and generosity. This is a traditional association rather than a claim about what the stone will do.

The symbol
Ek Onkar opens the Guru Granth Sahib and states its central idea before anything else is said: there is one. The numeral one and the character are written without lifting the pen, because the meaning is indivisible. Reproducing that unbroken line using separate stones is the difficulty and the point of the piece.
How it is made
Thirty four citrine ovals at 3 by 5 mm, matched for tone so the amber stays even along the whole stroke. The long tail is laid last and in one pass, because any hesitation in spacing shows immediately along a single continuous line. Placed by hand onto cream suede, framed in solid wood, engraved base.
