Shri Ram Showpiece in Natural Rhodolite Garnet
Rhodolite Garnet · Walnut
Available, individually presented
राम, written in natural rhodolite garnet. A deep raspberry red that shifts toward crimson as the light moves across it. Where our amethyst Ram is quiet and inward, this one is warm and declarative, closer to the saffron and vermilion the name is usually written in. Devanagari is drawn, not printed. The shirorekha across the top is laid in a single unbroken run, and every letter below hangs from it exactly as it would from a calligrapher's hand. Marquise cut stones are used at the terminals, where a rounded stone would blunt the stroke. Set onto cream suede, framed in solid wood, standing on its own engraved base. In many households Ram naam is written rather than spoken. A piece like this belongs where that practice already lives: a puja room, above a doorway, or on a shelf where it is seen each morning. In the tradition, rhodolite garnet is used as a stone of Rahu, associated with drive, resolve and worldly ambition. This is a traditional association rather than a claim about what the stone will do.

The symbol
Ram is the name given to right conduct, to keeping one's word at cost to oneself. Writing the name repeatedly, likhit jaap, is a devotional practice in its own right, and in many homes the written name is kept where it can be seen rather than stored away. Rendered in stone, the writing becomes permanent, which is the whole intention behind the practice.
How it is made
Rhodolite is a harder stone to match than amethyst. It runs from raspberry through to a deeper crimson, and stones from the same parcel can differ noticeably, so each one is checked against the last before it is laid. A single cooler stone in the middle of a stroke pulls the eye straight to it.
The shirorekha, the line across the top, is set first and in one continuous run, because every letter below hangs from it. A stone out of true there would tilt the entire word. Marquise cuts are used at the terminals where a stroke narrows to a point.

Questions about this piece
It is an object for a home or a desk. The stones are laid on cream suede inside a solid wood frame with its own stand, not mounted in jewellery. It is not a ratna prescribed for astrological remedy, and nothing about it needs to be worn, energised or activated.
