Om Showpiece in Natural Amethyst

Natural Amethyst · Walnut

Available, individually presented

The Om, drawn in thirty three square cut amethysts. Square stones are an unusual choice for a curved character. Each one has to be turned slightly against the one before it so the eye reads a continuous line rather than a row of blocks. It is the most exacting of our pieces to lay, and the reason the finished Om has a faceted, almost architectural quality that rounded stones cannot give. The amethyst is a deep violet throughout, set against cream suede and framed in solid wood. Om is the first sound, the one held to contain everything that follows. It belongs in a puja room, a meditation corner, or anywhere a household begins its day. In the tradition, amethyst is used as a stone of Shani, associated with patience, discipline and steadiness, and often chosen as a gentler alternative to blue sapphire. This is a traditional association rather than a claim about what the stone will do.

The symbol

Om is held to be the sound from which everything else follows, the syllable spoken at the opening and closing of prayer. Its written form carries the three states of waking, dreaming and deep sleep in its curves, the crescent for illusion, and the dot for the silence beyond all four. Drawn in stone rather than written, it is meant to be looked at rather than read.

How it is made

Thirty three square cut amethysts, thirty one at 4 mm and two at 5 mm. Square stones are far harder to curve than rounds, and each is rotated a few degrees against its neighbour so the line reads as continuous rather than stepped. The upper curve is laid first, because everything below is measured from it. Laid by hand onto cream suede, framed in solid wood, engraved base.

Questions about this piece

It is an object for a home or a desk. The stones are laid on cream suede inside a solid wood frame with its own stand, not mounted in jewellery. It is not a ratna prescribed for astrological remedy, and nothing about it needs to be worn, energised or activated.
