Two letters and an ampersand, drawn in natural gemstones. J and L, joined. The ampersand is set in stone like everything else, never left as a gap, because it is doing the work of the whole piece. Two letters side by side are just two letters; the ampersand is what says they belong together. The J descends below the line and the L sits square on it, so the two are balanced by stone size rather than by height. Set onto cream suede in the same amethyst, citrine, peridot and blue topaz as our sacred pieces, framed in solid wood, standing on its own engraved base. The symbol
Two letters together say something a single letter cannot: that a household began when two names met. The ampersand is the oldest symbol we still use for the idea of two things held as one.
How it is made
A two-letter piece is a problem of balance rather than of drawing. The J drops below the line and the L sits square on it, so the two must be evened out by stone size, not by height. The ampersand is set stone by stone like the letters, which is harder than it looks: it is a small figure with three changes of direction, and it sits between the two letters where any error is most visible.
