Gemstone Art or Jewellery? What Actually Changes

The moment a gemstone is set into metal, a series of decisions is made on its behalf. Prongs decide where you may look at it from. A bezel decides how much of the girdle you will ever see. The metal decides the colour temperature of the light reaching the stone from behind.

Light behaves differently

An unset stone resting on suede is lit almost entirely from above and returns that light straight back to the viewer. There is no metal bouncing warmth into the pavilion and no shadow cast by a claw. Colours read truer, and subtle zoning inside the stone stays visible instead of being masked.

Composition instead of setting

Freed from a mount, stones can be arranged in relation to each other rather than in relation to a piece of metalwork. That is what makes a mandala, a monogram or a constellation possible in the first place. The composition becomes the structure.

Longevity

Settings loosen. Prongs wear thin, and a stone that has been reset three times has been handled three times more than it needed to be. A sealed presentation removes that cycle entirely; the piece is composed once and then left alone.

Which should you choose

If you want to wear it daily, you want jewellery, and jewellery is a wonderful thing. If you want to look at it, live with it and hand it on, gemstone art gives the stones a great deal more room to be themselves.
