Naming & A New Baby

A child's initial, set in natural gemstones

For a namkaran, a first birthday, or the first thing to go on the wall of a nursery. Their letter, made once, and kept long after the toys are gone.

Why an initial suits a new baby

  • A namkaran is the ceremony where the name is given, so the name is the gift
  • It is the one gift a child keeps: clothes are outgrown, toys are handed on
  • Moves from a nursery shelf to a desk to their own first home
  • Nothing to age, wash or wear out, and nothing that arrives in duplicate
  • Sealed under glass, so it is safe in a room with small children

Which letter, and what it costs

  • Letter H, Rs 19,900
  • Letter S, Rs 21,900: no straight line in it, the hardest letter we set
  • Letter D, Rs 29,900: set entirely in natural blue topaz
  • Letters are ready pieces, chosen by the letter rather than typed to order
  • Om in amethyst, Rs 13,900, if the name is not settled yet

If the letter you need is not listed

  • Message us with the initial and we will say how soon it can be made
  • The full name or the date of birth is drawn to scale first, as a commission
  • Commissions take four to eight weeks, so start before the naming day
  • You approve a stone by stone drawing before a single stone is laid

The Detail

Price, stones and how it is made

What it costs

  • Rs 8,900 to Rs 13,900: Ek Onkar in citrine, Om in amethyst

The stones

  • Amethyst, citrine, peridot, blue topaz, pink tourmaline and rhodolite garnet
  • All natural gemstones, never lab grown and never glass
  • 27 to 53 stones per piece, depending on the symbol
  • Some stones are heat treated, by methods long accepted in the trade
  • A certificate listing every stone comes with the piece

How each piece is made

  • Every stone chosen individually for colour and cut, then laid by hand
  • Nothing moulded, nothing printed, and no stone set into metal
  • Each stone turned a few degrees against the last, so a curve reads as one line
  • Cream suede backing, solid walnut frame, engraved base so it stands on its own
  • About a week of bench work per piece, by one artisan from start to finish
  • Numbered and made in small numbers. No two are identical

How it arrives

  • Sealed in its frame, wrapped, and packed in a lined gift box
  • Certificate of authenticity included, listing the stones
  • Nothing to assemble and nothing to tidy before handing it over
  • Free insured delivery across India, signed for on arrival
  • Can be sent straight to the person receiving it
  • 7 day returns on ready pieces. Commissions are final unless faulty

Questions about this piece

The child's initial, since a namkaran is the ceremony where the name is given. A single letter drawn in natural gemstones and framed in walnut is specific to that one child, and it is kept long after clothes are outgrown and toys are handed on.
